Angelina Jolie: From Actress to Ambassador

Born in 1974 to actor Jon Voight and actress Marcheline Bertrand, Angelina Jolie worked as a professional model from the age of 14 before shifting her focus to acting. Her film career developed throughout the '90s as her profile grew, accelerating its growth in 1997, and in 2000 she won an Oscar for her role in Girl, Interrupted (1999). She has also won three Golden Globe awards.

Angelina's profile continued to grow in 2001 with the release of the film version of the Tomb Raider console game. Angelina played the film's lead role, Lara Croft, who was already famous in her own right for her bodily assets, as well as, of course, her appetite for action and adventure. A sequel was filmed and released in 2003. Angelina did nearly all of the film's action sequences herself, learning air ballet, weapons training, martial arts, yoga, horse-riding, and jet skiing so that she could.

While filming the first Tomb Raider film in Cambodia Angelina fell in love with the country. She went on to adopt a Cambodian child, and set up homes in both Cambodia and the UK. She became passionate about moving beyond acting, towards using her life to make a difference in the world.

In the summer of 2001 Angelina became a United Nations HCR Goodwill Ambassador. She published her diaries from this work and they sold well internationally, increasing the awareness not just of problems that exist, but also of solutions being provided and further solutions required. She has also privately funded the building of education centres and secured areas of land for conservation, as well as making cash donations to various projects.

In 2000 Angelina married for the second time to American actor/writer/director Billy Bob Thornton, however she began divorce proceedings in July 2002. Her first marriage was to British actor Johnny Lee Miller (of Trainspotting fame), from 1995/6 to 1999.

Lara Croft in Angelina's chart

Actors who become known for certain roles tend to have features in their chart that match the character they become known for. In Angelina's case, the cool, witty, sexy, 'action woman' character of Lara Croft is easy to see - Sun and Mercury in Gemini for the wit, with Moon, Mars, Jupiter, Chiron and MC all in Aries for the action heroine side, adventurous, free-wheeling, courageous. A quote from Jolie illustrates these placements:

"The truth is I love being alive. And I love feeling free. So if I can't have those things then I feel like a caged animal and I'd rather not be in a cage."

With Jupiter on the MC Angelina comes across as larger than life; interviewers often comment that she seems so much smaller than they expected when they meet her in real life.
Angelina Jolie - Natal Chart
In terms of midpoints, Pluto is on her Moon/first point of Aries midpoint and her Mars/first point of Aries midpoint. This reflects qualities such as bravery and fearlessness in the face of danger and death, and the involvement of the Moon brings in the feminine, showing that it is the inner image of the anima that carries these traits. Another quote from Angelina:

"I seem to be getting a lot of things pushed my way that are strong women. It's like people see Hackers and they send me offers to play tough women with guns, the kind who wear no bra and a little tank top. I'd like to play strong women who are also very feminine."

The Moon is on the Mars/Jupiter midpoint, which is quite literally 'action woman', symbolising the 'women who run with the wolves.' One Lara Croft Tomb Raider scene shows Angelina being pulled by dogs on a sled in the Arctic. Moon on Mars/MC shows a public persona carrying these qualities of strength, toughness, and fighting to protect. In Angelina's words:

Venus on the Ascendant, Sun opposite Neptune, Moon trine Neptune all convey something about personal charm and charismatic beauty that has broad appeal. The Neptune contacts also represent acting ability, the capacity to mirror, reflect, display and portray human nature and emotion in a way that engages.

Ambassador in Angelina's chart

"I've been reckless, but I'm not a rebel without a cause." - Angelina Jolie

With all those Aries planets coupled with the Neptune aspects, there is an innocence and childlike simplicity about Angelina Jolie. She is known for her straightforwardness and directness, as well as her determination to help with the UN refugees work where people face desperate survival situations. Survival is an Aries issue, and with the Moon and Mars - both survival issue planets - amplifying this theme, it's not at all surprising that Angelina has been drawn to playing the larger-than-life action heroine who always survives no matter what the odds, and that she has personally resonated with the survival plight of refugees, particularly children.

Whilst Neptune and Jupiter aspects can be used for entertaining and acting they can also be used for humanitarian work and for endeavouring to bring about improvement in people's circumstances. As well as using them in being an ambassador for human issues on screen, these planets can be used to act as an ambassador for human issues in real life.

With her Chiron in the 10th house of vocation, her Cancer ascendant, Saturn in Cancer in the 12th, Angelina is making her work out of caring, mothering, fostering, and nurturing. In one interview the question was poignantly raised two or three times about refugees going home once it's safe to do so, and also the issue of rejecting refugees and asylum seekers from the countries in which they are seeking asylum. Whilst the raising of this issue with and by Angelina can be understood on an academic level - she has undertaken training in the issues of refugees' safety in going home - there is arguably an astrological justification for viewing the issues as very significant for Angelina personally in terms of safety and home, particularly as adoption of a child and providing it with a settled home were important changes in her life that were approximately coincident with her awakening to this side of her vocation. Additionally, her relationship with Billy Bob Thornton ended around the same time as she gained this new focus to her life.

Angelina has remarked that in doing her UN ambassador work she feels as if she is fulfilling more of her purpose. With the factors already discussed, plus Sun in the 11th house of social connection, and the MC on her Uranus/Pluto midpoint representing the need for a career that satisfies her desire to create change and humanitarian reform, her chart confirms her instincts in pointing to this direction. With her Saturn Return* now complete, the real work of her life has begun in earnest.

* A Saturn Return is when transitting Saturn returns to the degree it was in when a person was born. It occurs at 29 years of age and is a significant turning point professionally and personally.
